Car wont start when warm?

Postby mgyurkejr » Tue Jun 02, 2009 8:21 pm

Car: 1989 Iroc Z-28, 44,000 miles.

Problem: We've had the car for approximately 4 years now and obviously dont drive it much. Recently it has started acting up. It starts fine when the engine is cold, but after it gets warm and you shut the car off it will not restart. It will crank, but not fire.

Our mechanic has done a full tune up and changed the fuel pump, throttle body gasket and other misc. items but it continues to act up. Its at the chevy dealer now where they just performed an injector cleaner but that was no help. Their wanting to change the injectors but ive been quoted $1700. Could this be the problem? Other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

injectors cost about $250 for all 8 and about 2 hours time to change them.

or pull them out and have them sonic cleaned for 1/2 the price

is it a 305 or 350 ?

Jon at Fuelinjectorconnection sells Bosch III 22lbs injectors for $169,95
I have those in my car, and the car has never had smoother idle and better throttle response, so I can really recommend Bosch III from FIC.

He leaves 3 years warranty on them to.

Have you checked the fuel filter?

I put in a $150 pump and it died soon after due to a clogged filter. Car would run then stall and refuse to startover unless it sat.

Pull the filter off and make sure you can blow through it.

Same here.New pump and filters.Im starting to think its a sensor outa range causeing the engine to think its cold and flooding it out.

Next time it won't start, pull a plug and see if it's wet. If it's dry, it could be injectors, but if it's wet (more likely) then it's probably just a coolant temperature sensor.

When the CTS shits out, it tells the computer that it's -40 degrees outside, which makes the computer add a ton of fuel at startup. When the engine is cold it can deal with this, but when it's hot, it winds up flooding.

I would definitely look into this before screwing with injectors.

When you say crank but not fire, does the motor physicaly turn over or is it just a click and no go?

If its the click and no go, one thing ive found on both my third gens is they starter solenoid gets hot and doenst like to fire off right so i remote mounted it, and kabam never had that "heat soak" non start up ever again.

I have another problem with injectors - 3 years ago two of them broke (electrical problem - probably there is a short in the coils) and car runned like sh*t (shaking, stalling, uneven idle, no power) and I borrowed another set from my friend (this set came from earlier TPI and injectors were Bosch-style instead of Rochester/GM style) - it cured the problem but car had problems with starting when warm ever since. Recently friend asked me to return his parts back so I had to figure out something fast - I bought two 305 injectors (from 91-92 car) and put them in the car along with the rest of my good injectors - it's not something you would normally do, because injectors should be from the same set, but I didn't had money to spend on a new parts at this time and it was the cheapest solution... Anyways - now car runs OK and starts OK even when warm, has good driving power but when it goes into closed loop idle starts hunting, car is shaking etc (it's possible there is an air leak somewhere but I couldn't find any)... thats why I bought a new set, and I'll install them as soon as they arrive...

I received injectors three days later - WOW, that was fast.

Bosch III style injectors are different than Bosch II or Multec/Rochester - they're shorter and don't reuse original retainers but I installed them without too much trouble. And idle is smooth again (well not very smooth but it's not worse than before the problems started and is caused by something else I think).

So King - thank again...

No problemas :)

FIC's Bosch III I linked above are the same install height as stock multec ones and dosent need the retainer clip so thats as it should be :)
